At SMAHRT, we stand by doing and disseminating the best science out there. We are also committed to sharing our data so that other scientists may ask new questions and learn new things worth sharing.
We currently have several datasets that include social media data and/or survey or interview data.
We are interested in working with other scientists to allow access to our data to ask novel questions.
These datasets include the following:
- Using Media to Understand Mechanisms of Behavior Change: In this 5-year NIDA-funded study, we collected alcohol and substance use information from college student participants. We also evaluated participant’s Facebook profiles on a regular basis for the emergence of new or escalated displayed references to alcohol and substance use. Thus, we were able to connect the emergence of substance use on social media to self-reported substance use. We collected information on other variables pertinent to the context and influence of social media and substance use.
- Social media posts by marijuana companies in Washington state: We collected social media posts by marijuana companies in Washington state over one year. We coded posts for variables including type of marijuana posted, types and numbers of models featured, and targeting posts.
- The Technology Behavior and Addiction study involved a national sample of young adults ages 18-25 years (n=6000). The cross-sectional survey included measures of technology additions (problematic internet use, video game addiction and social media addiction), technology behaviors, as well as health risks related to technology (sleep, physical activity, alcohol use).
Our processes for sharing data are designed to promote ethical access and ensure confidentiality of our participant’s contributed information, these processes include the following steps:
Proposal: Before we provide data to any investigator, we will provide general information on the dataset so that you can outline a project proposal. We will review the proposal to ensure your idea/question is unique and not in progress with another investigator. We have secure processes to deliver the data to you.
Data extraction: Extracting data from our dataset can be a time-consuming process. Estimate it will take 1-2 weeks for this process given that it is added to work that team members already do. Please ensure you have identified all variables at all time points before asking for data extraction so that we can do this in one data pull.
Data provision: We will provide you with de-identified data.
Data storage: To protect participant data, we ask that you only store this data on a secure password protected computer.
Presentation of findings: IF your data includes social media posts and you intend to include this data in any presentations or publications, you must work with a member of SMAHRT to ensure the example posts are not identifiable.
Submitting abstracts and papers: In all abstracts or paper submissions, we ask that you keep our team posted on presentations and publications so we can track publications for our funders.
Documenting grant number: All presentations and publications from this work must include documentation of the appropriate grant number and submit published papers for a PMC within the appropriate time.
If you are interested in potentially using our data, please fill in the fields below and we’ll provide additional information about what is available, so that you can determine if our data fits your research question.
