International Women’s Day 2022

International Women’s Day 2022 is dedicated to creating a gender equal world. Our team continues to put in the work to contribute to a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. We want science to thrive through the excellence that comes from diversity and celebrates the innovative contributions of all researchers.

This year to celebrate we wanted to take a moment to highlight the innovative work being done by our female team members.

Join us in celebrating them!

Promoting Research in Social Media and Health Symposium 2021

Five of our women research interns, Amrutha Garimella, Grainne McDonagh, Lekha Pillarisetti, Quin Alfredson, and Zoe Stratman, presented their research at PRISM 2021 in San Francisco, California. This was their first time presenting at an in-person, national conference since they started on the team in 2020! Click to read more about their projects.

Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine 2022

Reese Hyzer, Zoe Stratman, Lekha Pillarisetti, and Amrutha Garimella will be virtually presenting their work this month at the SAHM 2022 meeting. Reese is both a school psychology PhD student at Loyola University and a part-time SMAHRTeam member. Zoe, Lekha and Amrutha are second-year research interns on SMAHRT.

Pediatric Academic Society 2022

Each year, our team members are honored to present our work at PAS. This year, 3 female team members will be attending and presenting their research in Denver, Colorado for PAS 2022. Quin Alfredson will be presenting on her social media and depression systematic review project. Grainne McDonagh and Maggie Bushman will be sharing their text analysis of news articles about the relationship between social media, depression, and teens from the last decade.

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is an important part of our intern’s experience on SMAHRT. This year we will have two interns, Abby Hommer and Carsyn Campbell, presenting their independent projects at their university’s Undergraduate Research Symposiums. Both Abby and Carsyn are completing secondary analyses of a large, SMAHRT dataset.

New Female Team Members

SMAHRT has been fortunate to have added several new female team members to our team. Chelsea Olson joined in January 2022 as a Scientist. Jacqueline Sii and Katie Sullivan are undergraduate students who have just joined our team as research interns. Arohi Gadagkar is SMAHRT’s newest communications intern. We can’t wait to hear their perspectives and have them contribute to team projects.

Awards

SMAHRT’s Principal Investigator, Dr. Megan Moreno, exemplifies what it means to be a woman in science and medicine. In 2021, Dr. Moreno was awarded the Advancing Women in Medicine and Science Award from UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health’s Group on Women in Medicine in Science (GWIMS), the distinguished Norman J. Siegel New Member Outstanding Science Award by the American Pediatric Society (APS), and the WARF and selected for the Kellett Mid-Career Fellowship. Dr. Moreno is serves as a role model and mentor for all members of the SMAHRTeam.
